Citrus and Anise Mulled Wine
This week’s episode looks at star anise and allspice with a special holiday-inspired recipe for mulled wine.
Star Anise:
A spice that has star-shaped pods with a taste similar to licorice
It’s well known for its presence in Chinese 5-spice blend and garam masala spice blend
Star anise is a rich source of flavonoids and polyphenols which have been found to be antioxidants and anti-inflammatory.
Allspice:
A spice that is a berry that has been dried and then ground into a very aromatic powder
The British called it allspice because it smells and tastes like several spices such as cloves, pepper, cinnamon, and nutmeg
Historically, allspice has been used to help with indigestion, respiratory congestion, and for headaches

*I added spiced rum instead of the brandy and it was great.
