Citrus and Anise Mulled Wine

This week’s episode looks at star anise and allspice with a special holiday-inspired recipe for mulled wine.

Star Anise:

  • A spice that has star-shaped pods with a taste similar to licorice

  • It’s well known for its presence in Chinese 5-spice blend and garam masala spice blend

  • Star anise is a rich source of flavonoids and polyphenols which have been found to be antioxidants and anti-inflammatory.

Allspice:

  • A spice that is a berry that has been dried and then ground into a very aromatic powder

  • The British called it allspice because it smells and tastes like several spices such as cloves, pepper, cinnamon, and nutmeg

  • Historically, allspice has been used to help with indigestion, respiratory congestion, and for headaches
