Curried Spirulina Popcorn

This week’s episode goes into full detail about what ancient and whole grains are, gives a list of examples of them, and the recipe is Curried Spirulina Popcorn. Ancient grains are grains that have been in existence for hundreds and maybe thousands of years that haven’t changed over time. Some examples are: emmer, spelt, teff, and buckwheat.

Whole grains are grains that have all the components of the grain still intact: the bran, endosperm, and germ. This is the very sophisticated drawing I showed on the episode:

When the entire grain is still intact, you receive all the benefits and nutrients the grain has to offer. When the grains are refined, they are stripped of many of the nutrients, such as in white rice. Some examples of whole grains are: whole wheat, quinoa, sorghum, millet, teff, wild rice, freekah, and farro.

Popcorn is also considered a whole grain that is why I chose it for the recipe.

Curried Spirulina Popcorn

Ingredients:

1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil

5 tablespoon popcorn kernels

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

1/2 teaspoon spirulina powder

1/2 teaspoon curry powder

garlic powder to taste

salt

Instructions:

Heat olive oil in a heavy-bottom pot over high heat and add 3 popcorn kernels; cover with a lid. Shake the pot occasionally to fully immerse the kernels in oil. Wait until the 3 kernels have popped. This will be the sign that the oil is ready.

Pour the remaining kernels in the hot oil; cover with lid and cook until all the kernels are popped, shaking pot occasionally.

Transfer popcorn to a bowl and drizzle extra-virgin olive oil over popcorn; toss until coated. Add spirulina, curry powder, garlic powder, and salt and toss until coated.
